The concept of the beanstalk is both simple and complex. It is perhaps the most difficult and time-consuming element in the construction. There will be these funnel-like flowers on the vine which the visitor can insert a coin. The coin then rattles down the interior of the beanstalk which is all fabricated from copper tubing and sheets. You can see how various components are taking shape. Jim used real beanstalks to designs his sculpture. There will be leaves, pods and flowers. Giese Manufacturing has high speed cutting devices that are computer controlled. Nonetheless, Jim has to then form the leaves individually before welding them to the beanstalk, Also not that the beanstalk emerges from a copper bucket. This bucket will serve as a depository for the coins that are inserted into the flowers. The overall design is changing with fabrication as we determine what works best for the overall functionality and appearance of the piece. It also gives us the opportunity to be even more creative as we make discoveries during the artistic process and collaboration. After this portion is completed, it's transported to a welding shop where the well will be constructed around the vine. Lastly, masonry will be added to the base of the well when installed at its location. |
