Newsletter Assignment

This was a super assignment, the second in our series for the class. Design and Build a Newsletter was an opportunity for students to leverage Quark XPress' capabilities to precisely fit type and manage diverse graphic files.
Not only is this a wonderful title, but a bold and clean layout. I love the white space at the left. It makes what text is on the page that much more accessible and readable. Dennis Frank was in my Advertising Design class last fall, and he is not only an adpet software user, but a designer with a good eye.
I enjoy the elegance of this design. This page is comprised of perhaps seven or eight frames. Charmayne McMurray works in publishing (she's a Clarke Time-Saver student), and she comes to Quark with much familiarity. But she tells me she is still learning something new every time she comes to class. And we are learning from her how to craft a fine looking newsletter.
Angie Klein. A clean and effective layout. The three-column grid was a specification of this newsletter on 8.5 x 11 inch stock. A bold design move reversing the the headline type. Angiie was one of a group of students who simultaneously came up with the same banner title, Late Night with Gary Olsen, obviously referring to the evening class schedule and the show-business way we approach learning in this class. The title, by the way, was fully rendered in PhotoShop, drop shadow and all, and then imported as an eps in Quark. A good production strategy.
Ardell Sanders. Mr. Sanders made excellent use of Quark's ability to manage spot color. Absolutely wonderful design. The keylines are strong and effective in organizing page content.
Heather Kloss. Heather is into graphics big time (she's a professional photographer). She emphasized the visuals in this layout, since, after all, Quark is a visual medium and not necessarily a word processing program. Great use of a tinted text box. And note the icons that utilized Quark's custom and automatic masking ability enabling multiple layers of graphics. The pencil icon was rotated in Quark. Congratulations on discovering the object rotation tool.
Jackie Ricke has executed a very clean and striking layout. I enjoy how the graphic in the middle fits into the columns on either side. Quark's runaround menu provides precise control over type wrapping. And note the Quark logo in the corner that has been rotated and placed over the corner of the main visual. Very advanced technique.
I truly enjoy Kelli Clark's work. Very good technique on the initial cap and nice font choice. Interesting to note, a couple of students in the class had some computer problems and had to do their projects over on the day they were due, and I believe Kelli was one. She managed to pull off a stunning re-do of this newsletter in a fraction of the time it took to do her original, proof that with Quark, you improve with continued practice and application of the program. Kelli is Queen of Quark. Okay, maybe Heir Apparent to the Throne.
Can you dig this? Juan Salazar prepared our Spanish language edition of Quark Expresso!
Beth Kunnert is happening with this edition of Class Act. Good choice of type styles and Beth shows and excellent facility for text runarounds on the small graphics. Beth is another Bootcamp veteran having taken my Advertising Design class last fall. She is modest about her accomplishments but so talented.
