his is a great way for us to keep in touch, share information, and maybe it will save us a little time. Need to send a message to the instructor? Click here to do just that. I plan on adding any questions you have during the course of this class to an informational database. It will include my responses to your questions. Also, I plan on posting your projects as they are completed. I promise you this will be fun. Check this page for your classmates e-mail addresses listed below. Also, any questions you might have that would be good to share with the group, send them along.

Caricature photos are posted on the Web for the next class assignment. All you have to do is click here, and you're off to the races.

What we've covered so far...

  • Basic image manipulation tools (The Toolbox)
  • Menus and Submenus from the top command bar.
  • Resolution
  • Creating composite images from a variety of sources
  • Using Vectors to create Clipping Paths
  • Working with Layers and Layer Properties

Question about Zip Disks: How should the disk be formatted to run cross platform? PC or Mac formatting?

Answer: PC formatted disk is best. It will run on our lab's Macs with little difficulty, but you must follow the following naming convention on all files.

When you are on the Mac, save files as if you were on your PC running DOS. Use no more than 8 characters, and follow the name with a three letter extension. .psd stands for Photoshop Document. Photoshop files are layered files in the native application. They will open correctly on both PC and Mac running Photoshop. .jpg stands for JPEG, which is a flat image in RGB.

Remember, PC disks will run in a Mac machine, but a Mac formatted disk will not run on a PC unless the PC is equipped with a software utility called "MacOpener." But if you use a PC formatted disk, and name your files correctly, they will open fine on both platforms. Remember, NO SPACES in the files names.

Your Memory of a Lifetime project!

We will be embarking on a major project as part your participation in this class, and you must begin collecting objects for photography which will be part of a "Memory of a Lifetime" print you will develop in Photoshop.

Go to the following URL to see some examples (Memories) and begin thinking of what you want to feature in your project. You need one overarching theme (you, your parents, a sister or brother, grandparents) around which you will build your project.

Think three-dimensional objects... pins, badges, buttons... and think about a textured surface for your background. Incidentally, you may create your own texture in Photoshop... one which may involve a photograph, so we can always keep our options open.

Current Deliverables:

We are working on our Memories piece which will count for about half your total grade. It is a project that will demand everything you've learned and will continue to learn about Photoshop.

Two more class projects are also your responsibility:

The PostCard

The Caricature

These will be in-class projects which will demand a little creativity but a lot of applied knowledge of PhotoShop.

Digital Photo Session at My Studio

We've had our first Digital Photography session to prepare our materials for our major class projects, and it went extremely well. We shot nearly 400 photographs and they are all on the Web:

I divided the libraries into four volumes.

Library #1

Library #2

Library #3

Library #4

Instructions: Once you see the thumbnail library, you can click on the photo you want to download, and once the larger JPG image appears in your browser window right click on it (on the Mac click and hold). You will have the option of copying the file into Photoshop or saving it to disk.

Class Member's Directory

At right see the hyperlinked member directory of our team. If your e-mail address is not here, then get it to us. If you don't have e-mail, then you are probably not looking at this page so we'll do the best we can keeping in touch with these folks.

Schedule Information

Okay, gang.... things are back to normal, and we will continue to work judiciously toward our final project. Most everyone has their photos online, and that's terrific. We will be working on two more class projects before we continue building your Memories piece.

One is the Postcard and the other project is the Caricature.
