Juan Salazar

This is the most ambitious and complex project in the curriculum, a fully functional calendar. Juan combined his imagery from a previous PhotoShop course. Juan is wonderfully talented, and the calendar is his showcase.

Charmayne McMurray

Charcal.jpg (56006 bytes)

Charmayne has shown tremendous growth and creativity in class this semester, and the proof is in this calendar project. She just did a spectacular job on this. She is comfortable enough with the tools, I believe, that she can now turn her creativity free. I particularly love how she handled the image of her mother for the cover. She included the old paper frame which, I believe, is so interesting. It has an antique feel to it. Her scan was perfect. She picked up every detail, and her color choices... excellent! Charmayne should go into business making these, don't you think?

Dennis Frank

Dennis Frank did a fabulous job on his calendar project. Like the rest of the students, Dennis made use of Quark's Master Pages feature to build the base calendar page, then he merely had to edit each subsequent  page without having to rebuild each calendar grid. Don't you just love the use of full-bleed graphics he used on this layout?

Jackie Ricke

The color scheme that matches graphics on the facing page with tinted boxes on the calendar grid was accomplished with Quark's color management tools. If Jackie is about anything, she's about color. I think she may have a fine-art background, but if she doesn't, then she has a wonderful sense of color, a gift that obviously comes naturally to her.  She learned a valuable lesson building this calendar project, however. She trashed some of her graphics after placing them in the document. She forgot that she must save them (she was running out of disk space apparently), and when she tried to print the document, the printer couldn't find the connecting graphics files. Everyone has made this mistake at least once.

Heather Kloss

Heather has created a masterpiece calendar project incorporating her favorite characters from Winnie the Pooh (Heather puts me in the mind of the ever energetic Tigger). Heather has clearly mastered  Quark layout tools. I just love her combination of individual art objects and larger graphics. Of course, when one is faced with an image that doesn't quite fit the aspect ratio of the full page, she created a frame and tilted the image at an angle using Quark's powerful rotation tool!   Excellent job on the calendar page, too. Heather made excellent use of the master page feature in Quark. It makes creating a calendar, which is nothing more than multiple versions of the same basic grid, a breeze.

Angie Klein

Angie Klein is turning her favorite snapshots into a terrific Christmas gift idea. Shhhhhhh.... I think it's supposed to be a surprise.  What is not a surprise is Angie's great talent applied  to Quark XPress. Not only has she been creative, but incredibly productive. She is fast as lightning. She may not think so, but I've observed her in action.  Now, look at how effectively she used her palette of colors from page to page. She tied in the display page with the calendar page with color and type style. Another nice thing is the little shamrock clipart she popped into the calendar page.

Kelli Clark

CalFinal2.jpg (39591 bytes)

The graphics and how they are displayed make this calendar design one of the best in this class. Look at the color matching Kelli has accomplished in Quark, creating a match between the color bar behind the month and the decorative colors of the PhotoShop file on the facing page.  That cover is dynamite, too. As it turn out, Kelli has pushed Quark as far as it can practically go for page layout. She depends more on her skills in PhotoShop to create the soft drop shadows she was after, for example, on the cover. But when it comes to integrating complex typographical elements (like the calendar) and complex images created in PhotoShop, Quark is ideal. This is especially evident when you go to print your project. We all learned about Quark's powerful pre-press tools. Great job Kelli!

Ardell Sanders

ArdFin.jpg (57242 bytes)

An exceptionally executed and colorful calendar from Ardell!  I really enjoy this piece. Ardell is extraordinarily productive in his use of Quark XPress. Once again, the color yellow ties the entire design together from the cover through the calendar grid. I also enjoy his use of typography in Quark. The extremely accurate typography controls in Quark give a designer like Ardell all kinds of possibilities.  Great job Ardell!

Beth Kunnert

Beth did a wonderful job pulling this together. The continuity of color from the images to the tinted boxes is masterful. The calendar grid is straight forward and utilitarian. What I enjoy most is the cover. It involves a good user of contrasting images, and the text choice and positioning is excellent.

Well, this is the last assignment in the class, and I must say, this batch of students did a remarkable job. It was not all smooth going. We encountered some interesting technical issues that even I couldn't immediately solve, but that's all part of the learning process (for both student and instructor).  I hope to see you in class sometime. Visit the other gallery pages and see the growth in skills and sophistication.
